Transience I
Posted by David Walter Banks on Monday Aug 24, 2009 Under personalLast week I packed up my car and hit the road for a 5-day 3,500 mile drive across the country with my new (yet old and beat up) Hassleblad and a bunch of chrome. The idea of the trek was simple enough, but the real goal was to keep my eyes open for something more. I hit every rest stop along the way, drove for a minumum of 12 hours a day (16 at most), stayed in lonely isolated cheap motels, and spent most of my time in solitude. The theme that emerged was that of the roadside oasis catering to the transient lifestyle of the trucker and traveler. These places are more than just what they appear on the surface, they are a product of the lifestyle of their patrons. This is an idea that I plan to explore more in depth in the year to come and one that I hope to come to better understand.
